A LEGO shop display piece I recently acquired. Although the individual piece are glued together, they were seperately moulded, so there might well be single pieces available in these shapes.

The scale is approx. 11:1, you can see the regular sized LEGO version on his head!

Indiana Jones 'Friend'

We don't normally feature the 'friend' size shop display figures on this blog (i.e. the ones with longer legs and proportioned like the Jack Stone figures and not proper minifigures) but I thought this one was worth the web space!

I spotted this one on the top of a retail shelf in 'The Big Shop' in LEGOLAND Windsor.

I don't know why they continue to do figures like this when there are no minifigures like this in current sets, why can't we have a proper minifigure? Anyway, enough of me moaning about that, it is Indiana Jones after all!

x20 Technic Dinosaur!

OK, so this isn't a new model and you have probably seen it before, but this 20:1 scale Technic Dinosaur from the official set 8485 is in the Windsor LEGOLAND park, near the imagination centre. This was the first time I had managed to get a decent photo of it.

It is actually the biggest model in the park. I thought I built big at 10:1 scale!

6 Scale Horse ... finished!

I did manage to get our horse finished for the recent display at LEGOLAND Windsor as part of the world record LEGO tower celebrations. I even had time to do a proper rider and saddle!

And here is a shot of it on display in Windsor.

Batman!

This excellent Batman sculputre (inspired by the 3723 official Minifig Sculpture) was designed by Deane VanLuven. There is fantastastic detailing (using SNOT) on the torso.

After searching around the web for more pics I found these in from Kelley's Picasa photo page.

You can see the huge size of the LEGO window presence in this shot!This photo shows an an amazing Cargo Train! (Looks to be 10:1 scale). I would love to see more photos of this and want to see how they have done the boxcar you can just see on the left of the photo.
There is also these that are similar to a previous post, but thought they were worth including anyway.

Life On Mars Alien

Not the greatest of quality pictures because I cropped it out of another photo, but this Life On Mars alien was on display in the big shop in the Windsor LEGOLAND in 2002. The scale looks to be about 10-12:1.

New Shop Display Figure Size!

I spotted these pictures in Gracecewu's flickr gallery recently.

As well as the 'Friends' scaled figures, there are some new properly proportioned figures I haven't seen at this scale before. They look to be about 12:1 if I am seeing it correctly.

There are also parts of a Fire & Police Staion and also the police helicopter in the same scale, but bizarrely a smaller scaled Fire Engine! This really must be a very large display to see in real life and is apparently in Königstrasse Street in Stuttgart and it might be exclusively a LEGO store, but I don't think there is a brand store there?

This is great news and hopefully means a much needed move away from the old 'Friends' scale and back to proper minifigs like they used to use for shop displays.

If anyone else has pictures of this type of figure we would love to hear from you.

EDIT: After a bit of searching on the net I found that this display is actually in a department store called Galeria Kaufhof.

6 Scale Horse : Work in Progress

Well, Brick Street (otherwise known as Richard!) came down to stay again at the weekend.
We spent some time building 6 scale figures based on James Sutton's designs. Also Richard did this excellent 6 Scale Horse!

It is really a WIP at the moment and he has left me with the daunting task of finishing it off, but he hasdone excellent work! A bit more work needs to be done to the head, including finishing off the bridle, but is amazing that he put this togther in about half a day! He had pre-prepared some drawing to help him though, I just wish I was any good at art :(

Large Duplo Ferrari

6 Scale Knights

The figures for the 375 castle were designed by James Sutton, another Brickish member in the UK. I had my doubts that figures at this scale would ever look totally believable, but I think you will agree that these do.

James has also made LDraw files and I think that it is his plan to make them available to anyone who wants them at some point, so I expect to see many of minfigs at this scale in the future!

Well done James, I will certainly be making some very soon. They are sooo cute!

6 scale 375 Classic Castle !

Where do I start with this! This castle was built by Duncan Titmarsh, fellow member of the Brickish Association in the UK and was mostly assembled in the last 4 weeks believe it or not!

Check out this picture to really get a sense of the scale of it! (The original size set is on the table to the right).

I was lucky enough to get to help build and take this apart at the Brickish AGM in Sheffield at the weekend. It really is amazing how big this is and you know it is a big LEGO model if you need to look up at it! I always wanted to know how what it felt like to be a borrower :)

The hinges on the castle worked like the official set and proved very handy for the steady stream of people who wanted to get inside it. (Duncan is the guy inside the castle in the earlier picture).
The attention to detail is amazing, even the drawbridge can be raised and lowered. I will talk about the figures in a separate post or this will get too big.

Congratulations Duncan, this certainly raises the bar in terms of scale building and part of me just wants to give up now as this is way out of my league!

6 Scale Collaborative Build

I built a lot of 6 scale bricks yesterday for a collaborative build at the Xmas party of the Brickish Association next week.

I had a lot of white 2x2 round corner bricks (macaroni's) so I built a lot of white ones! I am not sure what the completed model is going to be yet, but will post a report about it after I get back.

Darth Vader Statue

I have also managed to get hold of one of these to add to my collection.

There was only six of these made as previously reported in our post here. I bought one from someone who won it as a competition prize, but then deceided they didn't want to keep it ... good for me!!

He is the same scale as Spiderman and the Harry Potter models, I wonder if any more have been made in this scale? I am probably forgetting some...

Again, it was sent to me in the original box (pictures here) which had interesting information including his birth date (22/01/07).

6041 - Armour Shop X6

This is a very nice x6 scale set of the classic castle set. I saw it at the Skaerbaek event recently.

It looks very impressive and I loved the horse and the sheild detailing. The minifigs look very effective, but are very hard to do at this scale, especially to get the head/face right. I am glad I build to the larger x10 scale as it is much easier to get things looking rounder!

My Spiderman!

I decided to go for it when they same person had another one for sale. It actually looks a lot nicer in the flesh (or should that be brick!) than in the auction photos.

An interesting thing is that it got sent to me in the original packing box which had some interesting info on the label. It gives the year, serial number and the country and name of company that built him. I had heard that all the display models that more than one are made are produced are made in the Czech Republic, so this confirms it.
I am also interested about the 'SM04' part of the name. I wonder if this is the 4th model they did in this type, or if there was other Spiderman models?

Pirate Captain!

What do you get if you cross a teacher from Hitchin with a Data Analyst from Exeter, a Pirate Captain of course!! This weekend your two blog writers met up for some team building and after 9 hours of pretty intense building came up with this.

The pirate captain is based on the Pirate Lady model that was made by LEGO and displayed in Hamleys. They were also featured in the Bricks 'n' pieces magazine.

We would love to hear from any of the original modelmakers or anyone who has any photographs of the display in Hamleys or if you know where any of the models are now!

Harry Potter

Even though I missed out on Spidey, I did buy this! I know you don't particularly like this model Richard :-) but it was reasonably priced so I went for it! I think Hagrid is going to be harder to find ... It is actually in excellent condition.

This Harry Potter model was a prize in Toys'R'Us stores in the UK (and possibly Europe?) and I think that stores had one each to give away as a prize. The US had a different one (as far as I know) which is shown below.

I much prefer my one, but there is one interesting feature with the legs on this model. They have tried to get over the fact the legs slope outward towards the bottom (thanks Richard :-) by actually stepping it out a brick half way down. It looks rather weird! The hands are a lot better than the Euro one though as they can actually hold stuff!

Spiderman Statue!

I saw this on ebay recently. I did bid on it, but got outbidded. I have been regretting this and think I should have gone for it a bit more, but it sold for £272 ($543 USD) anyway, so I was reluctant to spend that kind of money with a seller with zero feedback from Hong Kong.

Was I wrong? Do you think this is even real? (I have never seen one before, but it looks along the same lines as the Harry Potter one).

Are these two new minifig sculptures the same scale? - What do you think Gizmo?

It would be brilliant if LEGO sculptors are making 'real' minifigs now instead of 'Friends'. I guess over the ten years or so that the 'Friends' have been displayed there could have been a shift in opinion about them - or even a new generation of designers (who favour the traditional minifigs).

Fingers crossed. (Now - they just need to work on that nose!).

SW Maquette Chase Heads!

OK, I have now found pictures of the randomly inserted Han and Anakin heads that come in Darth Vader/Stormtrooper maquettes. I think I am going to have to open mine to see if I have one!!

I REALLY have to have these! (The Han one is fantastic!)

EDIT: I ripped open (well, more like very carefully separated!) the boxes when I got home last night and there was no Han head ... boo ... but there was a Anakin head, woo hoo! Number 11 and a Anakin head ... double woo hoo! Now I really want to know how many of the 1000 had them inside :)

They are very nice items, made of heavy resin rather than plastic, and I will try and put together a review of them pretty soon, but I will be doing a show at the Windsor park at the weekend so it will be next week sometime.

I thought I had posted about this before, but couldn't find it (please tell me if I'm wrong!). It is made by renowned LEGO sculpture artist Sean Kenney and it has approx 7,500 pieces. Just one criticism ... where's the logos :)

This car was featured in the August 2007 of Elle Magazine.

Star Wars Maquettes

I don't know if anyone has seen them, but these 6 inch high statues by Gentle Giant Studios are very nice! They are based on the look and feel of the Video game. The heads are removable and interchangable.

The Darth Vader and Stormtrooper ones are being shipped now, but are limited to 1000 pieces each and were sold out very quickly when they went on sale. I got mine a couple of days ago, but they have been delayed a long time as I ordered them in October 2007! I was happy when I looked at the number on Darth though as it was 11 of 1000! I think the first ten would probably be held back or given as prizes, so it might be the lowest number sent out normally! (The Stormie is number 161 if you care!)

The 'Blackhole' Stormtrooper was limited to only 500 pieces and was only available from one Star Wars event in Japan. I got mine from ebay a last month. They are already selling for silly money on ebay, so Iam glad I got two at the time when they were cheap :)

The Boba Fett one is still on pre-order and a few more are going to be made than the others as they are limited to 1500. There are not all sold out yet and you can order theme here.

I havn't opened mine yet, still deciding whether to or not :) but if I do I will post again with more pictures. I am really interested to see what kind of scale the plate they are standing on is though, so I might have to 'bite the bullet' and open them! Also, randomly inserted in the boxes are an extra 'chase' head of Anakin for Darth or Han for the Stormie, so I want to see if I have one. I have no idea how many of the 1000 contains them, and havn't even seen any pictures of them yet!

Darth Vader Sculpture

This is one of only 6 Glued Darth Vader large minifigs, made by LEGO themselves.

This one was signed by Dave Prowse (the original actor if you are not a SW fan!) at the Celebration Europe event in London recently. It was featured on athe TV programme, 'Richard and Judy' in the UK, but I missed it :( It was sold on ebay to raise money for charity and made an incredible £1,650 pounds!! (about $3300 USD).

It is approx 20 inches tall and it looks to be about 9:1 scale. It is very cool and I would love one of the other 5!

3723 Official LEGO 'Maxifig' Set

I decided to make this set recently after recent comments and other highlighted custom Maxifigs that people had made.
I never bought the set at the time because it was pretty expensive and I waited to long for it to be on sale! I built the set from the instructions available at Peeron and by pieces I already had. I had to compromise on some pieces as I did not always have the correct parts, but the finished model is the same. There is a lot of 'L' shaped bricks and plates in the set and they are not always easy to get hold of. I also used a lot of my green plate for the hat!

I do have some LEGO logo stickers from the Promo Truck set that I thought of using, but I personally think it looks better without them (like most sets).

I have to agree with Richard that there is something wrong with the proportions, especially with the limbs. It's also a strange choice of colour, but I think it looks pretty nice as a display piece rather than a true scaled-up Minifig.

I don't know why, but I had the urge to build something scaled up to Deskpal size '4x'. I had a go at a section of The Week-end House 6370. Unfortunately my camera flash is a bit bright and you can't see the detail on the door. I don't really intend to keep this model, but it might be cool to finish it - or build something smaller like the blue Post Office 6689 - or CAFE CORNER 10182 - Droooooool (The door is the same design after all).

Here is an excellent 'Maxifig' scale (approximately 12:1) Knight on horseback. I found it in ogretzky99 's Brickshelf folder. It was displayed at the Frenchen show earlier this year.

OK, so this is not really a scaled-up minifigure. It is more like the proportions of a Jack Stone figure as it has longer limbs. A lot of the park models tend to be done to this scale.

The question is, are these models 'allowed' on this blog? If this is something you would like to see thats fine, please let us know. Likewise, if you feel this is out of place here we won't include ones like this in the future.

Can anyone suggest an appropriate name for this type of display model?

Look what turned up at 7:30am this morning! As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it... I havn't had time to clean it up or anything yet, but apart from a few small missing pieces it all works fine.

It comes from (or was at least made at the same time as) the display in Hamley's, London in the Summer of 1989. You can see an article in the 'Bricks 'n' Pieces' magazine that Richard highlighted earlier here:

Like other display models the limbs are held on with wing-nut fixings which can be tightened and loosened to allow different poses. The pistol is removable and is Red because Brown bricks were not used a lot at the time.

Giant Light-up Female Minifig!

This is one of the figures that was used as a LEGO light display in Blackpool, England in 1991.

You can see an article about the whole display in our earlier post on this blog.

It is hard to tell from this photo, but the figure is actually about 6 foot tall!

It has a lot of bulbs in it that really make it well lit as it was displayed outside.

We would love to here from anyone who actually saw this display or even anyone who has photos of it, that would be fantastic!

18x Scale Fireman Minifig

This has to be my favourite scaled up figure yet!

It is about 18:1 scale and is a glued model so would have been part of a shop display or used at a promotional event.

His limbs are all articulated and they are held in place by the use of wing-nuts inside to keep them in position.

His head and top of shoulders come off to be able to access the body cavity to tighten the arms.

This is the same figure that I am currently working on, but mine is only 1:10 scale to fit my Fire Chief's car.

This is another piece (like the bubble bath figures and the 30:1 scale workman) from the amazing collection of Phil Traviss which I was lucky enough to see recently. There are still more to come!

6x Scale 928 Classic Spaceship

This is a 6x scale 928 Classic Spaceship made by Lego. The picture was on a postcard from the '81/'82 Club Rally day in Leeds, UK.

They havn't modelled the studs, so I don't think it's as cute as the x3 924 model blogged earlier, but it was produced 20+ years earlier!

Another Large Bubble Bath Figure

This is another one that I hadn't seen before. I know the Red/Black and Blue/White versions are reasonably common, but I hadn't see this colour variation before so I guess it is quite rare.

30:1 Giant Minifig!

At 30 times normal size, this is the largest Minifig figure made from bricks I have seen!

A huge store display model. His hands are fixed in this position so was probably originally holding something.

It is very hard to see just how big it is from this shot. He is so big it is difficult to move (he is attached to the wooden base board so he won't fall over).If I tell you his eyes are 3 bricks tall and 6 wide then you might get more of an idea of his size!

Large Scale Star Wars Minifigs

Potato has a load of excellent Star Wars scaled up figures in his gallery. They look to be based on the same scale as the official LEGO Maxifig sculpture.

This is my particular favourite.
